Pete Rahn Presentation at Road Gang Luncheon

In this State to State video former AASHTO President, Peter K. Rahn, director of the Missouri Department of Transportation explains the use of "Practical Design" a project planning and management system Rahn says is saving millions of taxpayer dollars and creating a positive image of MODOT across the state. Practical Design encourages transportation planners to think beyond a single transportation infrastructure project. Projects are examined on how it fits into the state's overarching transportation goals. Some projects are scaled back to meet immediate needs yet save money while other projects can be scaled up, to fit meet the state's long-term goals. Rahn shared his views during a speech at a luncheon at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting Jan. 14, 2009. Rahn also touted eight initiatives that have helped the department to dramatically improve its public profile: 1) fast and less expensive projects, 2) smooth roads, 3) saving lives, 4) Operating frugally 5) marketing and providing information 6) listening and responding 7) improving visibility and congestion and 8) outstanding customer service.
